HONGKONG CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A Special General Meeting of the above body was held on Jan. 3rd, at their offices, the Hon. J. B. Taylor in the Chair. There were present Messrs. Kresser, Belilios, Melchern, Vogel, Pyke, Taylor, Sassoon, Coughtrie, Crichton, Zimmern, Granville Sharp, Delbanco, Walker, Ryrie, Hitchcock, and Buxey. The Chairman, on opening proceedings, said the meeting had been convened by circular, which had been sent round on Saturday. The Committee had met twice during the past week with respect to addressing the Minister with reference to the convention just concluded at Pekin. A letter was drawn up, which the Secretary was called upon to read, as it set forth the actual business

before the meeting now. The letter is as follows:

To His EXCELLENCY SIR RUTHERFORD ALCOCK, K.C.B., H.B.M.'S MINISTER PLENIPOTENTIARY TO CHINA, &c., &c., &c. SIR.-The appearance in the local newspapers of the 23rd instant, of the text of the Supplementary Convention to the Treaty concluded at Tientsin between Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and His Majesty the Emperor of China, has led the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce to turn their attention afresh to the Treaty relations of the two countries, and to the questions brought forward in the Convention; but the interval between its appearance
